Arguments over controversial goals will be a thing of the past next week when goal-line technology is used for the first time at the Brazil World Cup.

14 cameras are used in the system, which costs as much as around £137, 800 a year.

GoalControl co-founder and managing director, Dirk Broichhausen, said Frank Lampard's wrongly disallowed goal in England's knockout match against Germany at the last World Cup was key to goal-line technology being introduced for this year's tournament:

Digitalized pictures are sent to a data room, sitting in the top of the stadium. After analysing the data, the message will be sent to a special watch worn by the referee with the word "GOAL" appearing if the ball is over the line. The whole process takes less than a second.

With the eyes of the world on the World Cup next week, Fifa will be hoping this move brings an end to any embarrassing own goals scored by referees.
