After victory against Armenia in their last friendly, 2014 FIFA World Cup contenders Algeria were hoping to give themselves another confidence boost ahead of the finals in Brazil when they met Romania in Geneva.
Midway through the first half, the Desert Foxes deservedly went into the lead.
Abdel Djabou's cross was fumbled by Manchester City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, and Tottenham's Nabil Bentaleb was on hand to tuck the ball in.
But Romania, who were denied a place at the finals in Brazil after losing a playoff to Greece quickly restored parity.
Some neat buildup play allowed Alexandru Chipiu the chance to run through on goal.
He rounded goalkeeper Rais M'bolhi to make it 1-1.
However Algeria, who have never been past the opening round of the World Cup in three attempts, took the win.
Hilal El Arbi Soudani at full stretch giving the North Africans a respectable victory in their final warm-up game.
They'll need to keep up their form as they prepare for their Group H opener against Belgium in Belo Horizonte on June 17.
