The 167km route is from Maniago to the mountain of Monte Zoncolan; one of cycling's toughest climbs.
Stage leader Michael Rogers of Australia was being pursued by Francesco Bongiorno until the Bardiani Valvole rider was pushed on the back by a fan, forcing him to take his left foot off the pedal. Bongiorno recovered to finished the stage third.
Team Tinkoff-Saxo rider Rogers made the most of the situation as he accelerated to victory in a time of 4 hours 41 minutes and 55 seconds.
24-year-old Quintana all but guaranteed the 2014 Giro d'Italia title as he takes a 3 minute 7 seconds lead into Sunday's final day.
Rogers meanwhile made Giro history by becoming only the fourth different winner on the legendary Zoncolan; leaving the remaining 18-man breakaway down under.
