Rigoberto Uran won the 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia and took the overall lead from Cadel Evans on Thursday (May 22nd).

Stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia saw a 42 km individual time trial from Barbarasco to Barolo.

Although bad wearther once again created significant difficulties for the riders involved.

Thankfully, the Swede rider was able to get up before being taken to hospital for further checks.

As the day progressed and the rain stopped, the conditions improved for the lead riders who were last out of the blocks.

The Omega Pharma - Quick-Step rider completed the hilly course in 57 minutes 34 seconds.

87 seconds quicker than Italy's Diego Ulissi in second.

His time proved enough for him to take the maglia rosa away from Cadel Evans.

The Australian came into the day with an overall lead of 57 seconds over Uran.

However, he was only able to secure third place in the time trial, 94 seconds behind the Colombian.

Pre-race favourite Nairo Quintana finished 13th, 2:41 behind compatriot Uran and is now 3:29 adrift in the general classification.

The race features six mountain-top finishes in the remaining nine stages, something that will favour Quintana as he attempts to produce a comeback.

Friday's stage 13 takes the riders 158km from Fossano to Rivarolo Canavese.
