David Ferrer's bid to reach a fifth straight final at the Mexican Open came to an end on Thursday, when he was forced to retire through injury.
The Spaniard was facing Kevin Anderson in the quarter finals and took the opening set 6-2, but a left adductor strain meant the end of his tournament.
Anderson will face Alex Dolgopolov in the next round after the Ukrainian advanced with victory over Igor Karlovic.
6ft 8 Karlovic slammed down 18 aces throughout the game, but Dolgopolov came through 6-4, 7-6 to progress to the last four.
And elsewhere Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov beat Ernests Gulbis 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 to set up a meeting with Andy Murray, who knocked out Gilles Simon in their quarter-final clash.
