Heavy winds blow away pieces of the Estadio da Luz roof

Tuesday, February 11 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Heavy winds blew away pieces of the roof at Lisbon's Estadio da Luz in Portugal on Sunday (9th February) - the stadium that will host the Champions League final.

    Script:

It was the worst storm to hit the Portuguese capital in years.

And the result in an important derby was totally unexpected.

As the crowd gathered to watch a much anticipated match between Benfica and Sporting Lisbon at the Estadio da Luz, pieces of roof began to break off.

Pieces of fibre glass began to gather around the stadium and supporters had to be evacuated. Some steel sheets blew into the empty seats once the stadium had been emptied.

The match will be replayed, weather permitting, on Tuesday 11th February.

Such extreme conditions are not expected to affect the 2014 UEFA Champions League final on May 24th which will also be held at the Estadio da Luz
