The most successful club in Argentinian football was looking to get off to a winning start in the Torneo Final against Gimnasia this weekend.

River Plate have no less than 35 domestic titles to their name, but finished a disappointing 17th in the Torneo Inicial, the competition for the first half of the season.

They started with good intent though in front of their own fans in Buenos Aires.

A neat inside ball from Matias Kranevitter gave Manuel Lazini a chance to open the scoring early on.

The hosts then had claims for a penalty waved away after Franco Mussis had brought down Jonatan Maidana in the36th minute.

Just before half-time River's pressure finally told - Leonardo Ponzio's cracker making it 1-0.

They were also the better side again in the second half and should have stretched their lead through Fernando Cavenaghi.

It mattered little though, Ramon Diaz's side held on to claim victory by a single goal.
