Intro:
Eredivisie leaders Ajax Amsterdam were held to a 1-1 draw in the Dutch Eredivisie at PEC Zwolle on Sunday (9th February).
Script:
Ajax travelled to face PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie with an opportunity to go seven points clear at the top of the table.
And the Amsterdam side started brilliantly as they took the lead just seven minutes into the game.
Lasse Schone hooked a dangerous free kick into the box and Davy Klaassen finished well with a header to make it 1-0 - the perfect start for Ajax.
Frank de Boer's men should certainly have doubled their lead in the 21st minute.
Ricardo van Rhijn's cross found Siem de Jong in acres of space in the box but the Ajax captain elected to hit it on the volley and sent his effort over the bar.
The visitors would soon be made to pay for their wayward finishing as Zwolle found an equaliser through Guyon Fernandez.
The Dutch striker making the most of a spot of luck - Vermeer saving his first effort, but the rebound fell kindly and Fernandez tucked it away to make it 1-1.
Zwolle then had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping the scores level - Diedrick Boer with an excellent stop from Joel Veltman's header just before half time.
He then denied de Jong with a reaction save on the hour mark.
The home side almost had the last laugh but the woodwork came to Ajax's rescue twice.
Fred Benson hitting the post before Jesper Drost somehow hit the bar from the rebound.
A incredible encounter ended 1-1, Ajax remain top - five points clear of Twente.
