Luis Aragones, who managed Spain to glory at Euro 2008 and is widely regarded as central to the country's recent golden era in international soccer, has died.

The Spanish football federation expressed their sorrow over the 75-year-old former Atletico Madrid striker's death.

Spain had previously been derided as under-achievers, but Aragones changed that perception with the 2008 victory in Switzerland and Austria, which paved the way for further triumphs under Vicente del Bosque at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

Aragones argued for a new approach in the dressing room, looking beyond established stars such as Raul and Michel Salgado, an idea for which he was widely criticised in the Spanish media, before results began to improve.

He created a new playing style based on the short-passing football that has brought huge success at Barcelona.

Aragones was also a successful coach at club level, most notably with Atletico Madrid, leading them to a La Liga title in 1977 as well as three Copa del Rey successes.
