  • Intro:

Spain and Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas paid tribute to the Luis Aragonés, who died on Saturday at the age of 75. The former Spain national team manager guided Spain to their first major trophy at an international tournament in 44 years with victory in the 2008 European Championship.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Iker Casillas, Real Madrid goalkeeper (on Luis Aragonés as a person):
"Luis was a good person because he spoke to you frankly, sincerely, honestly and my relationship with him was very good. He had a great influence in our generation of football players from an international point of view."

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Iker Casillas, Real Madrid goalkeeper (about the first time he met Aragonés):
"In my first match with him as Spanish national team coach he chose (Santiago) Cañizares. I was sad because I was picked under the previous coach, Iñaki Sáez. He (Luis) always spoke sincerely, so during training in the Canary Islands before playing against Venezuela -- I think we we won 3-2 -- he asked me what's going on? I was 23-years-old and I just said that I did not understand this selection change but I should have understood it because of the team. And he answered me: Ok but do not look at me like a cow watching a train passing by. I will always remember that phrase. I laughed with him at that and a lot afterwards."
