Second hosted third at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium in Brussels as Anderlecht entertained Club Brugge in the Belgian Pro League on Sunday.
Both sides were eyeing the chance to reduce Standard Liege's 10-point lead in the table, but chances were few and far between in the first half.
The first chance coming in the 27th minute when Massimo Bruno fired a shot at goal - but Australian international Matthew Ryan was equal to it.
Moments later and Anderlecht goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski was called into action - saving well from Kehinde Fatai low curling effort.
It was Anderlecht who opened the scoring just before half-time.
Brugge failed to clear a free-kick, Cheikhou Kouyate with the cross back into the box and Aleksander Mitrovic was first to react as he stabbed the ball home from close range.
Bruno went close to doubling Anderlecht's lead in the second half, but his curling shot went just over the Club Brugge crossbar.
The visitors created few chances at the other end, their best effort of the second half coming from Maxime Lestienne.
Kaminski did not convince with his save but it was enough to keep Anderlecht ahead.
The home side eventually sealed the victory when Demy de Zeeuw picked out unmarked substitute Fabrice N'Sakala in the box.
He skipped past a defender and a fired a low shot past Ryan to make it 2-0.
The win means Anderlecht moved clear into second place - seven points behind Standard and three clear of Club Brugge and Zulte Waregem.
