Intro:
Ajax returned to the top of the Dutch Eredivisie with a 1-0 win at Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday (26th January).
Script:
Following Vitesse's 1-1 draw earlier in the day, Ajax went into their match against the Go Ahead Eagles knowing that a win would see them go clear at the top of the Eredivisie.
The Dutch champions started strongly, just three minutes into the game and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson showed his strength to wrestle his way into the box.
But he was unable to put the finishing touch as he fired his shot straight into the hands of Eloy Room in the Eagles goal.
Lesley de Sa was the next to spurn an excellent chance.
A cross from the right found the Dutchman completely free in the box but he was to connect cleanly and sent hi effort wide of the post.
However, the hosts were also guilty of some poor finishing.
Jeffrey Rijsik was gifted an opportunity following some poor defending from Ajax but he sent his shot over the bar from a great position.
The Eagles had another chance to take the lead just before half time.
Sjoerd Overgoor was played through by Jarchina Antonia, but the midfielder shot barely threatened the Ajax goal.
The breakthrough eventually came in the 74th minute.
Lasse Schone's freekick was blocked by the wall, but the ball came back out onto the Danish substitute's left foot.
His follow-up left the goalkeeper no chance and made it 1-0.
There was still time for Bojan Krkic to hit the crossbar in the 83rd minute, it proved to be the final chance of the match.
Ajax win their eighth straight game as they go two points clear of Vitesse at the top of the Eredivisie table.
