Australia won the final of the Tokyo Sevens rugby tournament on Sunday (1 April) after Matt Lucas scored a late conversion to give his side a 28-26 win over Samoa.

Lucas slotted a long-range conversion with 23 seconds remaining after Australia captain Ed Jenkins crossed to level the score.

Alafoti Fa'osiliva crossed first in the final, but a brace by Shannon Walker put Australia ahead and the young Wallabies held a 14-12 lead at the break.

Damon Anderson stretched that lead in the second half with Australia's third try, but Samoa hit back twice through Fa'osiliva and Ken Pisi to take a 26-21 advantage before Jenkins' try evened the score.

New Zealand still remain top of the overall IRB (International Rugby Board) Sevens world series after seven of nine tournaments with 128 points.

They were beaten 17-12 in the semi-finals by Samoa.

Fiji are second overall with 122, and third-placed South Africa have 105, one point ahead of England and four clear of Samoa in fifth.

Australia lie sixth following their maiden tournament win this season.

In the Bowl Final, France beat the USA by 17 points to 12, with Renaud Delmas scoring the winning try.

While Fiji beat South Africa 10-14 in the Plate Final.

The penultimate round of the series will be at Glasgow in Scotland on the 5th and 6th of May.
