Gomis gains Lyon 1-0 win

  • Intro:

A late Bafetimbi Gomis strike earned Lyon a 1-0 win at arch-rivals St Etienne on Saturday.

The result drew Lyon level with 'les verts' in joint-fourth in Ligue 1 with 46 points from 28 matches.

    Script:

St Etienne had only lost one of their previous six matches.

So a home win seemed likely when they met arch-rivals Lyon on Saturday.

There was little to choose between the two sides in the opening 45 minutes.

The referee was probably the most prominent character on the pitch, brandishing the yellow card five times during that period.

But it was a different story after the break as St Etienne 'keeper Stephane Ruffier was thrust into a starring role.

A stunning reaction save was required to deny Argentine international striker, Lisandro Lopez.

It took a very special goal to beat Ruffier - and it came from Bafetimbi Gomis.

This wonderful 81st minute strike from the substitute ensured success for Remi Garde's side.

A nice touch by Gomis, remembering Eric Abidal who is awaiting a liver transplant.

It finished 1-0 - meaning Lyon join St Etienne in joint-fourth place with 46 points from 28 games.
