Sunday, March 18 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Argentine Clausura leaders Tigre missed out on the chance to extend their lead at the top of the standings on Saturday (17th March), after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Estudiantes.

Leandro Benitez's 18th minute opener for the 2010 Apertura champions was cancelled out by a Diego Morales penalty nine minutes later and neither side could break the deadlock in a tight second half.

Tigre retain their two point lead over Estudiantes and Velez Sarsfield though, as Velez were also held, 3-3 at Union.

    Script:

Tigre were looking to make it five wins in a row in the Argentine Clausura when they hosted Estudiantes on Saturday.

But the surprise league leaders fell behind on 18 minutes - Leandro Benitez's floated free kick nodded home by an unmarked Mauro Boselli.

The porous Tigre defence punished by an opportunistic Boselli.

Back came Tigre, and if the first challenge wasn't a penalty, the second on Diego Morales certainly was.

The referee pointing to the spot and booked Christian Cellay for his reckless lunge.

Morales stepped up and fired an emphatic penalty to the keepers right - one all going in to the break.

In the second half chances were few and far between.

Boselli again found a way to get goal-side of his markers, but this time Tigre goalkeeper Javier Garcia was able to make the save.

And four minutes from time Gaston Diaz could have won it for Tigre but blazed over from eight yards out.

It finished one apiece - Tigre stay top, Estudiantes are third.
