WORLD CUP HOSTS: England could host the world Cup in 2022 instead of Qatar

Qatar’s tournament was in tatters last night after a leaked report raised fears of terrorism, corruption and war.

Experts claimed the oil-rich Arab country was “too risky” to host the event’s hundreds of thousands of supporters and the world’s best teams.

There are concerns that a Cold War-style stand-off between Qatar and its neighbours about terror funding could spill over into all-out conflict.

And there are also fears that scandal and widespread corruption in the country could damage the game’s name.

Experts are predicting an “abrupt” ditching of the Qatar competition – leaving England in prime position to come to the rescue as emergency hosts.

One top football source said last night: “England is ready for football to come home.

"We are long overdue a World Cup and have a proven track record in hosting major sporting events like the Olympics.

"We could practically take on the 2022 tournament overnight. Our cities could take the fan influx, our public transport is capable and the stadiums are of the highest quality.

"Qatar should never have got this competition in the first place.

"It’s way too hot in the summer and is nowhere near ready to host the world’s greatest sports event.”

The fears were outlined in a leaked report by consultants Cornerstone Global to construction firms looking to help build World Cup stadia and infrastructure.

The document cited a rising “political risk” in Qatar, which has been dogged with concerns over terrorism, corruption in building stadia and even possible war.

It warned construction firms it was a “high-risk” project and added: “Tournament insiders and regional experts have both stated to us that it is far from certain Doha will actually host the tournament.”

CONFIRMED: Ex-Culture Secretary John Whittingdale confirmed England would be ready to step in

Ex-Culture Secretary John Whittingdale has previously confirmed England would be ready to step in and host its first World Cup since 1966.

He said: “If Fifa came forward and asked us to consider hosting it, we have the facilities in this country.

"And, of course, we did mount a very impressive, if unsuccessful, bid to host the 2018 World Cup."
