He sadly died of liver failure.

But as a stark reminder of his father, Ronaldo has posted a family picture in front of a painting of Aveiro.

Ronaldo and son Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. held twin babies Eva and Mateo.

And the former Manchester United winger wrote: "You will always be with us."

Aveiro died in September 2005 while Ronaldo was at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo has previously admitted he had a difficult relationship with his father, who battled an alcohol addiction.

The 32-year-old addressed the issue in 2015, saying: "My father was funny when he was drunk.

"But I didn't get to know him for real, from the heart and I don't know why he drank, maybe he was frustrated with his life.

"I wanted a different father, one who would be more present to see my achievements."

Ronaldo came from humble beginnings in Funchal, the capital of Madeira,.

Today the world superstar has an airport named after him there.

But back in the day his mother was a cook, and his father a gardener.

The seven-year-old Ronaldo started playing for the youth team of Andorinha, based in the Funchal suburb of Santo Antonio.

His teammates mocked him as his dad worked as the team's kit man - tidying up the changing rooms for a bit of extra cash.

But despite the taunts, Ronaldo didn't give in - in fact, he just trained even harder.

As four Ballon d'Or awards and 24 trophies testify...
