United substitute Darren Fletcher and others on the visitors' bench were furious after the incident.

Fletcher exchanged words with Arsenal supporters a few rows behind the dug-out at the Emirates.

The incident came after Kieran Gibbs scored an own goal to put United 1-0 up in the 56th minute.

Former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson previously complained about the lack of protection for away teams on the bench at the Emirates.

Arsenal have confirmed a man was arrested following the incident and that they were fully co-operating with the Metropolitan Police.

"We do not tolerate anti-social behaviour. If found guilty, the individual will also be banned by the club," said a spokesman.

It was not the only moment of controversy off the pitch on Saturday.

Following a second United goal from Wayne Rooney, one Arsenal fan unveiled a banner stating 'Enough Is Enough, Wenger Out'.

It was confiscated by a steward, who was then confronted by supporters asking why the protest was not allowed.

Arsenal have since claimed potentially inflammatory banners have to be confiscated on health and safety grounds because they could spark trouble if any of the crowd react badly to them.

The Gunners lost the game 2-1 and trail leaders Chelsea by 15 points.
