Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has been ruled out for 10-12 weeks after undergoing surgery on damaged ligaments in his left ankle.

Goal understands the England international fell badly in training on Tuesday, with the club confirming the extend of the injury on Thursday.

New manager Louis van Gaal admitted on Thursday that the losing the former Tottenham man would have a big impact on the team.

"There is, for example, Michael Carrick. He is injured, that is in my opinion a big blow because he is an experienced player," he told the press.

The injury hinders Carrick's chance of impressing his new manager, with the Dutchman already sanctioning the big-money arrival of midfielder Ander Herrera, and a long-standing interest in Arturo Vidal ongoing.

United have been dealt a blow in their chase for the Chile star, though, with Juventus chief executive Giuseppe Marotta insisting Vidal is "not for sale" on Wednesday.

Carrick has made over 350 United appearances since moving from White Hart Lane in June 2006, and played 29 Premier League games last term, an Achilles tendon injury limiting his mid-season availability.
