Artist Frank Shepherd puts the final touches to this year's Edenbridge Celebrity Guy.

A Kent bonfire society has unveiled a 49ft Wayne Rooney as this year's celebrity Guy for its display on Saturday.

The effigy, filled with fireworks and wearing green Shrek-style ears and a Manchester United shirt, will be set on fire at Edenbridge Bonfire Society's display, which is expected to draw crowds of up to 15,000.

The figure depicts Rooney holding a copy of his lucrative new five-year contract under one arm, and, in his other hand, a bag full of cash.

The society's spokesman, Charles Laver, said Rooney was chosen as this year's Guy to mark the string of tabloid stories about his personal life and his future at United.

"I hate football myself so I'm quite happy to burn a footballer. One of our members is a big Man U fan, so he's been advising us on getting all the details of the kit just right."

Past celebrity Guys include Cherie Blair, Gordon Brown, Russell Brand and, last year, glamour model Katie Price.
