Wood: "I need pace to be effective"

  • England quick Mark Wood said on Wednesday (24th August), that he's very happy to be back in the England side and delighted to be able to bowl fast after recovering from a 10-month injury lay-off.

"Yeah, I had a little bit of frustration... well, more than a little frustration the last few months. To come back for Durham so strongly is pleasing, I think the coach there, Jon Lewis, the way that the whole England medical team have looked after me the lsat few months here deserve huge credit and Jon Lewis at Durham, the head coach, looked after me really well and I was captained well by Paul Collingwood, who basically just said to us, 'don't worry about going for runs' and 'try to take wickets' and think that confidence of then getting a few wickets and playing the role that I did, for Durham, has given me the confidence to come back into the England side fresh and raring to go."

"Ah, I would say consistently quicker, I wouldn't say quicker, my top speed. I say that because I haven't got the pain, especially in the back of the ankle, which was causing us huge problems. I couldn't... people would often say that I couldn't play back-to-back games. It wasn't that I couldn't play back-to-back games, it was that I couldn't consistently keep bowling at 90 miles an hour and be as effective. I think I'm a totally different bowler if I'm bowling at 80 miles an hour, compared to 90 miles an hour. Just totally different bowler, totally different game. I need that pace to be effective, with no pain in the back of my ankle. I find that, obviously, a lot easier on my body and it allows me to do that, so I'd say consistently it's a lot better for me, but I wouldn't say I was bowling any quicker."
