Good day for Vekic and Vandeweghe

  • Early casualties in the women's draw of the rain-troubled Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati on Monday (15th August).

After two days of rain in Cincinnati, the Western and Southern Open hosted plenty of upsets in the women's draw, with Ana Ivanovic, Caroline Garcia and Sara Errani all out in Round 1.

Errani went first: the 2015 French Open finalist losing in three from 1-set to love up against Coco Vandeweghe.

Though only separated by a single ranking place - in the Italian's favour - it is Vandeweghe who has been in the ascendance this season, with her second career title at S'Hertogenbosch and good runs at Birmingham and Wimbledon.

She face French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in the next round.

And Ana Ivanovic was on the wrong side of Croatian Donna Vekic, when the qualifier snapped a six-month long losing streak to knock her out in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

The former finalist here continued her indifferent run of form, that includes last week's first round Olympics loss to Carla Suarez Navarro.

The Croatian will face Great Britain's Johanna Konta in the second round of the tournament.
