Ennis-Hill ready for some down time

Monday, August 15 2016 by SNTV
  • Great Britain's Jessica Ennis-Hill reflected on her silver medal-winning performance in the heptathlon at the Rio Olympic Games on Sunday (14th August), losing out to 21-year-old Belgian Nafissatou Thiam by just 35 points.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jessica Ennis-Hill, heptathlon silver medallist: (on how she is feeling after completing the heptathlon)

"Yes, very similar to how I felt last night. Just relief to have completed the two days, excitement, happy to have come away with another medal at another Olympics and just very emotional."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jessica Ennis-Hill, heptathlon silver medallist:

"She (Nafi Thiam, gold medallist) is incredible. She's always had that talent and it was whether she was going to put it together and how she would do that. But she had five personal bests across the two days and 1.98 in the high jump which is incredible individually. So she was an incredible competitor and thoroughly deserved that gold medal."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jessica Ennis-Hill, heptathlon silver medallist:

"Oh yes, I could say that about every event. I could go through them all and say 'if I'd just done this, if I'd changed that, if I'd got a few more points here then maybe it would be different' but that's sport and that's what happens and especially with the heptathlon. It's a tough event."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jessica Ennis-Hill, heptathlon silver medallist:

"I just felt that it was a very tall ask and 10 seconds is a massive gap, but I still had one event to do. I still wanted to hold onto that silver position and I just ran and gave it everything I've got with that last event."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jessica Ennis-Hill, heptathlon silver medallist:

"Yes, I think London (Olympics 2012) was definitely more challenging, just the pressure and it being my first Olympics was just really really stressful and I was just so anxious the whole year leading into it and this year I think I've enjoyed it a bit more. I've not felt as much stress, but saying that the past couple of years have been the most challenging years of my career with injuries and just having time away from the sport and coming back after having my son so yes. But they've equally been amazing, amazing performances and experiences but very different."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jessica Ennis-Hill, heptathlon silver medallist:

"Yes, I'm so proud and when I found out that I was having Reggie (her son) I knew that I didn't want to retire and that I wanted to get to this point and just being here in one piece and being part of this Olympics was my kind of goal, but to be here and to have ended up on the podium again is incredible."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jessica Ennis-Hill, heptathlon silver medallist:

"Yes. A good rest, a good break and just time to relax and do normal things with my family."
