Sunday, August 14 2016 by SNTV
  • Swimming fans in Singapore on Saturday (13th August) reacted to Joseph Schooling's victory in the 100 metres butterfly at the Rio Olympics.

SOUNDBITE (English) Oon Jin Teik, Singapore Swimming Association Secretary-General:

"The Singapore swimming will hopefully be inspired by this, it's not just an inspiration, it's a belief, it's a belief that you can excel, it's a belief that you can put your mind to do something regardless what you do, swimming or otherwise. And I think, hopefully, we recruit more swimmers, we hope to get more clubs, and of course our national training, our national training centre, and all I think the hope is that all the stakeholders, sponsors, employers come together to help."

SOUNDBITE (English) Derek Yip, Business Development Manager for a sports brand and Singapore Swimming Association Sponsor:

"They (the children) have all their posters, all his posters and whatever meets or autograph sessions, I always bring them there. Maybe they are not good in sports, but it's okay. I mean, youngsters or young kids need to have an idol, they then push them further in life I think."
