Team GB celebrate rowing gold medals

Sunday, August 14 2016 by SNTV
  • Gold medal-winning rowers were received at British House on Friday, 12 August.

SOUNDBITE (English): Helen Glover, 2-time Olympic gold medal winner in women's rowing pair (about their coach Robin Williams):

"We turned out to training and he is already out there, and we go home and we rest and we recover and he's still researching looking our rowing video, watching our rowing video, he thinks about it, the job doesn't end for him in the same way as it does for us that we get home and put our feet up, and he's there watching every single stroke that we take, he's there with us, and he doesn't get to stand on the podium, having a medal around his neck, but it really should, because he has worked just as hard as we have, maybe he hasn't been put through the same pain, physically, but mentally he is there with us every single stroke and so we owe so much to him."

SOUNDBITE (English): Heather Stanning, 2-time Olympic gold medal winner in women's rowing pair (About winning a second gold medal):

"To do a second gold medal at the Olympics it is amazing, I mean four years ago we set out to come back and defend our title and we've done that, so it's an amazing feeling to know that four years of hard work is really paid off."

SOUNDBITE (English): Mohamed Sbihi, men's four gold medal winner (about winning a gold medal):

"It feels really special, I got bronze in London, and you know I was disappointed, but also happy at the same time, it was a weird emotional race. This one is just happy, is just joy, it is just I want to get out and party and have some fun and celebrate with friends and family, you know, the guys and the crew…got back in the hotel, they are racing tomorrow, I just want to have a good time, it's now the chance to, when you finally get it around your neck. to celebrate and to appreciate all the hard work that everyone has done over the last four years."

SOUNDBITE (English): Alex Gregory, men's four gold medal winner (about making history for being the first country to win five gold medal in a row in this discipline):

"We had a massive amount of expectation on our shoulders this morning before the race, and yeah, it was just another thing to push us further and push us harder and make sure we did the job we needed to do. That history now continues, we can maybe pass it on someone else and give them that responsibility or some guys may carry on and try and do it again, but it is just lucky to have that history in our country and to now have our names amongst those our heroes in our sport, that is very special."
