Smith: "Sub-continent never easy"

Saturday, August 13 2016 by SNTV
  • Australia captain Steve Smith on Friday (12th August) said he was "disappointed" with his side following two Test defeats to Sri Lanka prior to the third Test beginning on Saturday (13th August) at the SSC Cricket Ground in Colombo

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australia captain:

"I was expecting it was going to be difficult. I think any time an Australian team comes to the sub continent it's never easy. I've been disappointed with the way we've played. Thinking back to the first Test match... to bowl Sri Lanka out for a 116... for us not to be able to cash in and get a fair way ahead of the game that was quite disappointing for us. And I guess from that point things have gone downhill. So coming to the sub continent we know it's never going to be an easy place for an Australian team to play."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australia captain:

"It's been a disappointing series from our aspect so far. This is another opportunity for us to play in the sub continent. With what looks like is going to be another tough wicket. So we have to find and way to prove to ourselves that we can play in these conditions. We haven't been good enough in the way we've played so far. For us, the series is gone, but there is still plenty to play for here in Colombo."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australia captain:

"We haven't been good on these wickets so far. I think we can take a little bit out of the way we played in the second innings in Galle. I thought we played with a little bit more courage. Guys were sweeping, guys were coming down the wicket, reverse sweeping, so we were able to have a game plan. I think for us it's ensuring that we do that for longer periods of time."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australia captain:

"I think you have to think proactively. I think if you just sit there and try and defend all day, one (ball) is going to have your name on it. So, you have to be willing to play with a bit of courage and take the game on and everyone will do that differently."
