  • Reaction after first day of fourth Test between England and Pakistan at The Oval

SOUNDBITE: (English) England batsman Moeen Ali

"I really enjoyed batting with (Jonny Bairstow), he gets me going. Getting hit on the head first ball, I had to wake up a little bit. But I am really pleased to get the hundred with Jimmy (Anderson.) I think the guys all the way down The guys all the way down (the order) batted really well with me and I was really happy and for the team."

SOUNDBITE: (English) England batsman Moeen Ali (about getting his century with a six)

"Once he (Yasir Shah) came on I thought this was the over. I blocked a few to make them think I wasn't going to go for it, then picked the ball, went on gut instinct, backed myself to clear the boundary."

Q: And the sweet connection as well. Was that as sweet as you've hit it?

A: "It was good. As soon as I hit it I knew it was six. I was really happy. It was a good connection. Probably my other two at Edgbaston were a little bit better."

SOUNDBITE: (English) England batsman Moeen Ali (about improving his batting)

"Just mindset, I think. I worked on my defence with Mark Ramprakash quite a lot and when I'm happy with my defence against spin I feel I can play well. At Lord's I think I wasn't quite on it and I was really embarrassed after my shot and that's when I really decided that I need to bat properly again. I was really sick and tired of not scoring that many runs for England. It was a little bit embarrassing, yes."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Pakistan spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed (about Pakistan dropping catches)

"In English conditions if you don't practice, if you don't concentrate hard what happened is the ball wobbles. In the end when the ball comes so close to you the technical thing is the ball actually moves around so if your basics are not strong and if you're not concentrating then the ball can go out of your hands. The reason I'm saying this is that people are playing in England forever - English teams - they have dropped nine or ten catches also in this series so far but the important issue is the important and vital time when we dropped catches then the game can run away from you."
