USA continue their swimming winning streak

  • Ryan Murphy won gold in the 100-metre backstroke final on Monday (8th August), whilst fellow American Lilly King won 100-metre breaststroke gold.

Ryan Murphy won gold in the men's 100-metre backstroke final on Monday to extend the domination of the United States in the event.

An American has now won every men's 100m backstroke final at the Olympics since the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Murphy was fourth at the turn, with Australia's Mitch Larkin setting the early pace - but Murphy reeled in Larkin to win with a time of 51.97 seconds - another Olympic record.

Lilly King of the United States won her bitter showdown with Yulia Efimova.

Efimova was forced to settle for the silver.

The bronze went to another American, Katie Meili.

King was critical of Efimova being allowed to compete in the Rio Games after serving a previous 16-month suspension for doping and testing positive again this year for the now-banned substance meldonium.

Possible sanctions over a second violation were put on hold while WADA does more research on meldonium.
