  • Rowers from New Zealand's 2016 Olympics squad faced the media in Rio de Janeiro on Monday (1st August). Eric Murray - a favourite to win gold in the men's coxless pair with Hamish Bond - said the team "are doing everything humanly possible to keep from getting sick" on the water at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Eric Murray, New Zealand rower:

(On water quality at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas).

"There's a lot of fish so that means that it's pretty healthy, wouldn't you say? I think we've had protocols from the NZOC (New Zealand Olympic Committee), we've had protocols from Rowing New Zealand around having our water bottles and plastic bags, hand sanitiser, you know, not trying to get water too much around yourself - and so far, so good. I think everybody's been vigilant on there and I guess as long as we keep that up then we as a team are doing everything humanly possible to keep yourself from getting sick if there is bugs and stuff in the water. And yeah, so far no-one's fallen over - so it's a good start."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Emma Twigg, New Zealand rower:

"I'm really happy with where I'm at. I'm loving being in Rio, I love the Brazilian people and I'm savouring every moment of this Olympic experience and perhaps looking at it slightly differently to London and Beijing. And I'm excited to be racing on Saturday, and yeah, looking forward to going out there. And I'm sure that there's going to be shots fired from everywhere in the women's single field, not just from across the ditch, so yeah, looking forward to it."
