  • Simona Halep beat Madison Keys in straight sets to win the WTA Rogers Cup in Montreal on Sunday (31st July).

For the second time in less than a month world number five Simona Halep was too good for world number 12 Madison Keys.

The Romanian followed her victory in the round of 16 at Wimbledon with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 performance in the final of the WTA Rogers Cup.

The 24-year-old is in a rich vein of form after winning her home tournament in Bucharest last week.

Here in Montreal there were no fewer than eight breaks of serve in the opening set.

The final break came from the 22-year-old Keys when Halep was serving for the set at 6-5, but the fifth seed regrouped and hit back to take the tie break 7-2.

Halep broke early in the second set and stretched her lead to 4-1 before securing a straight sets win, 7-6 6-3, to clinch her 14th WTA title.
