Meeke edges closer to Finland Rally win

Monday, August 01 2016 by SNTV
  • Britain's Kris Meeke remained on course for victory at the Rally of Finland on Sunday (31st July), after maintaining his 30-second advantage over his nearest challenger, home favourite Jari-Matti Latvala.

The final day of the Rally of Finland had four stages on the schedule, and Britain's Kris Meeke was looking to protect his 41.2-second advantage at the top of the leaderboard over nearest challenger, Finland's own favourite Jari-Matti Latvala.

There was plenty to play for behind the leading duo as well.

Ott Tanak started the morning 9.1 seconds down on third place, occupied by Ireland's Craig Breen.

But the Estonian driver pushed too hard on stage 22, spun off the road into a ditch and got stuck there.

Tanak's misfortune relieved some of the pressure for Breen, but chasing him are the Hyundais of Belgium's Thierry Neuvillle and Hayden Paddon of Australia.

With two stages to go, just nine seconds separate the trio.

Latvala, with more than a minute between him and Breen, appeared set to settle for second place as he made his way through stage 22.

That meant that Meeke could also take his foot off the gas a little.

Should he hold on, Meeke would secure a third rally win of his career and Meeke is already looking forward to a podium finish.
