Nishikori to face Djokovic in Toronto showdown

Monday, August 01 2016 by SNTV
  • Japan's Kei Nishikori booked a place in the final of the Rogers Cup in Toronto with a straight sets win over Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka on Saturday (30 July) - he'll face Novak Djokovic who beat Gael Monfils.

Quite the comeback for Kei Nishikori in semi-finals of the Rogers Cup on Saturday. The world's third oldest tennis tournament has hosted a stunning return to form for the number 3 seed, who pulled out of Wimbledon earlier this month with a rib injury.

Number two seed Stan Wawrinka had a 5-2 lead over the Japanese in Toronto, after breaking in the 5th game. But the Swiss player failed to convert four set points and Nishikori grafted hard to win the tie break (8-6).

In the second Wawrinka's concentration seemed to evaporate, and Nishikori raced to victory 7-6, 6-1.

The win takes the 26-year-old to his third ATP Masters 1000 final, where he'll meet Novak Djokovic. The world no1's semi was second on at the Aviva Centre, where he beat Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-2.

The Frenchman had knocked out home favourite Milos Raonic in a polished quarter-final performance, but couldn't make inroads against the Serb, winner here in 2007, 2011 and 12.

Monfils has never beaten the 12-time grand slam champion.

Nishikori has a better record to hold onto against Djokovic to before the final on Sunday... He did once beat him, in 2010.
