Jutanugarn closing in on first major

Sunday, July 31 2016 by SNTV
  • Ariya Jutanugarn leads by two shots after the third round of the Women's British Open at Woburn on Saturday (30th July).

It was another calm day at Woburn - a good day to go low on the par 72 course.

American Lexi Thompson needed to do just that if she was to remain in contention heading into the final day.

Little wrong with a round of 69, but at eight-under overall it left her some eight shots behind the leader.

Compatriot Stacy Lewis, a former winner of this event, has left it all to do if she is to repeat her success.

On day three, Lewis shot a round of two-under to sit nine-under overall.

Another former winner - Catriona Matthew - was at her brilliant best on Friday, but there was to be no repeat of this form on Saturday. A 71 left her six shots off the lead.

The 2014 champion - Mo Martin - ended the day in third. It could have been better for the 33 year old, though, had she capitalised on some splendid approach shots. Instead, Martin had to settle for a round of three-under, leaving her 11-under par.

Mirim Lee returned to the clubhouse in second spot.

The Korean also recorded a score of 69 leaving her two shots behind leader Ariya Jutanugarn.

Jutanugarn was in sublime form - holing out with the shot of the day on the 8th.

Her round of 66 consisted of six birdies and no bogeys, and she now sits at 16-under par.

With just one day remaining, the 20 year-old Thai is on course for her first major title.
