England inconsistent without Cook & Root - Bayliss

Wednesday, July 27 2016 by SNTV
  • England cricket coach Trevor Bayliss said on Monday (25th July) that England were fairly dependant on performances from captain, Alastair Cook & Joe Root.

Adding that Root has the talent to become one of the finest batsmen in the history of the game, following the 25-year-old's career-best 254 against Pakistan in the second Test at Old Trafford.

SOUNDBITE (English) Trevor Bayliss, England coach

"We haven't hidden from the fact that it (the team) is a work in progress, you take (Alastair) Cook and (Joe) Root out, quite obviously our best players, (but) we've got some very good players in there, obviously (Jonny) Bairstow's had some very good performances, so has (Ben) Stokes at different times, even (Alex) Hales in the last Series, but they are still making their way and looking for consistency of performance, like Root and Cook. The example they set for everyone else is a good one and hopefully those guys can learn from that."

    (Q. What impact does having a player like Joe Root have on the rest of the team?)

SOUNDBITE (English) Trevor Bayliss, England coach

"Now that he's batting at number three, if we can get off to a good start, it allows those players who are maybe less experienced a little bit more latitude, to come in at two or three (wickets down) for a lot of runs, rather than three or four for not many. It just allows them the freedom to go out and play their games."
