  • Barbora Strycova fought back from losing the opening set to beat Caroline Garcia 2-6 6-3 6-3 in the opening round of the Rogers Cup on Monday (25th July).

Samantha Stosur and Petra Kvitova had straight sets wins in the opening round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Monday (25th July).

Bouts of torrential rain hampered play in Montreal on Monday as the 2016 edition of the Rogers Cup got underway.

Barbora Strycova faced Caroline Garcia in her opening match.

It was Garcia who made the stronger start, hitting her stride early to power through the opening set 6-2.

But when rain forced the players off court, Garcia struggled to recover.

The experienced Strycova showed more composure and recovered well to take a 2-6 6-4 6-4 victory and book her place in the second round.

Former Grand Slam winners Samantha Stosur and Petra Kvitova had impressive victories on a rain-interrupted day at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Stosur, the 13th seed, overcame Britain's Heather Watson 7-5, 6-3 to join fellow Australian Daria Gavrilova in the second round.

Another first round winner was 2012 Rogers Cup champion champion Petra Kvitova.

The double Wimbledon winner and number 12 seed brushed aside Poland's Madga Linette 6-1, 6-2.
