  • Members of Brazil's Olympic sailing squad gathered on Tuesday (26th July) beside Guanabara Bay, where the rowing & sailing events will take place during the Games. Experts have stated the waters will not be pollution-free come August 5th.

Members of Brazil's Olympic sailing squad gathered on Tuesday (26th July) beside Guanabara Bay, where the majority of the Olympic sailing and rowing events will take place.

And the sailors then commented on the condition of the water, as the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee has faced renewed criticism for the filth still present in the waterways of Rio de Janeiro.

Guanabara Bay has always been the training ground for Brazil's Olympic sailing team, so to them, the concerns with the dirty water and the tons of rubbish floating are not new:

"This is something we would have liked to have as an Olympic legacy (the total cleaning to Guanabara Bay) but, in the end, we did not manage it. It is one of the reasons why we see a lot of countries that have an important sailing culture and this reflects the renovation of the sport. We, unfortunately, don't have the quality of the water that we would've liked to have but we are used to it."

Experts have admitted that the main outdoor aquatic areas will not be totally pollution-free during the games.

Sailors from at least 60 countries will compete in nautical events during the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro from this shoreline.

Sailing is also one of Brazil's strongest sports with 17 medals in Olympic history, including six gold.
