Golf should be included in the Olympics - Pettersen

Tuesday, July 19 2016 by SNTV
  • Suzann Pettersen gave her thoughts on golf's inclusion in the Olympic Games on Sunday.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Suzann Pettersen, twice major winner (on golf in Olympics):
"I think it should be there. One of the world's leading sports needs to be a part of the world's biggest arena. Unfortunately we have been obviously faced with a couple of different challenges which literally comes down to each individual how they would like to proceed with taking on what you can call such a risk as Zika or any other conflicts and you have to respect people's decisions. Personally I think it's very hard, I am 35 years old, I am about to get married, probably soon to have a family, I think it is a very tough decision to make. You feel like you could easily let people down, you can let the sport down, but at the end of the day I have decided to play, for me it means a lot and I think it is healthy. Hopefully, touch wood, you'll be fine, but I also think you have to respect say Branden (Grace), who is also in the same position. You have to respect people's decisions, but overall we as golfers need to take responsibility. Golf is only on the Olympic programme through to 2020 in Tokyo and then it is up to the IOC and with this first round, with such a big withdrawal from the major guys. I mean it is tough, I know Peter Dawson is crossing his fingers at this point. They have done such a great job and then all of a sudden you don't get the support from the best players in the world."
