Stenson wins thrilling Open Championship

Monday, July 18 2016 by SNTV
  • Sweden's Henrik Stenson created history as he claimed his first Major title after coming out on top in an enthralling final round with former champion Phil Mickelson to win the 145th Open Championship.

Stenson carded a closing 63 at Royal Troon to become only the second player ever to finish a major on 20 under par, equalling the record set by Jason Day in last year's US PGA Championship.

In the battle between Mickelson and Stenson on the final day of the Open Championship, it was the American who drew first blood, this stunning second shot on the 1st setting up his first birdie of the day.

The American's form continued to impress on the 2nd. But was luck not on his side?

But the crowd of 173,000 fans at Royal Troon soon saw Stenson making birdies, the first at the 2nd. And then again at the 3rd.

5-time major winner Mickelson wasn't going to go away though, an eagle on the 4th reminded Stenson of that.

Stenson and Mickelson were trading blows, but eventually Stenson was able to claim a two-shot lead, with this 50 yard birdie putt on the 15th.

Mickelson's eagle attempt at 16, so close yet so far. A familiar sight for the American in recent weeks.

Stenson made no mistakes on the 18th, just, to bring a fitting end to an astonishing day. The Swede won by three shots over Mickelson equalling Jason Day's 20-under 264 at last year's PGA Championship, the lowest 72-hole score ever in a major.
