  • Spain's national basketball team gathered at their training camp in Madrid on Sunday as they begin their final preparations for next month's Rio Olympics.

European champions Spain are one of the favourites for basketball gold in Rio this summer.

Boasting NBA stars like Pau and Marc Gasol and Ricky Rubio as well as Euroleague hotshots Sergio Llull and Rudy Fernandez, Spain are ranked second in the world behind the United States.

This will be their fifth consecutive Olympic appearance and they have been silver medallists at the last two Games, both times losing to the United States in the final.

Pau Gasol was MVP at last year's Eurobasket and will be in Rio despite publicly expressing his worries about the Zika virus in May.

His younger brother Marc is also in the squad with coach Sergio Scariolo giving the Memphis Grizzlies centre every chance to prove his fitness after breaking his foot in February.

Scariolo has called up 20 players to the training camp which will be whittled down to 12 for the squad to go to Rio.

Barcelona guard and EuroBasket 2011 MVP Juan Carlos Navarro is in the 20 as he seeks a fifth appearance at the Olympic Games.

Spain will be in Group B in Rio alongside Argentina, hosts Brazil, Lithuania, Nigeria and one of three teams from this week's Olympic qualifying tournaments.
