Minding silences critics to land Classic double

Saturday, June 04 2016 by SNTV
  • Minding overcame a troubled passage on Friday (3rd June) to complete a 1000 Guineas and Oaks double and give Aidan O'Brien his sixth win in the fillies' Classic at Epsom.

This was the calm before the storm for Ryan Moore, and there was a rare smile to go with it as he walked the famous undulating course on the Epsom Downs.

He was seeking to ride odds-on favourite Minding to a Classic double - a win in the Oaks to follow victory in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket just a few weeks prior.

There were doubts over the filly's stamina - many sceptical she'd last the mile and four furlong trip.

But stamina wasn't the concern on the day - the Ballydoyle runner travelling well until she ran into trouble and was bumped rounding the final turn.

Moore did what he does best though.

With a cool head, he spotted the gap and reeled in Architecture under Frankie Dettori.

And with a turn of foot that rightly had Minding pegged as favourite, she was off and away, to seal a sixth Oaks victory for O'Brien.

The dramatic Epsom triumph means the daughter of Galileo becomes the first filly since Kazzia in 2002 to complete 1,000 Guineas-Oaks double.
