New World Rugby chairman Beaumont "proud and lucky"

Thursday, May 12 2016 by SNTV
  • Former England captain Bill Beaumont was unveiled as World Rugby's new chairman at a press conference in Dublin, Ireland.

SOUNDBITE (English): Bill Beaumont, new World Rugby chairman:

"Personally I'm very proud. I'm of the vintage and generation that always played as an amateur player so you always felt that you got a lot of fun out of the game and you always wanted to keep involved in the game, and I've been lucky to keep involved in the game. I'd like to think that in 20 or 30 years' time, players who play professionally might still want to be involved in the game, and I hope they are.

SOUNDBITE (English): Bill Beaumont, newly elected World Rugby chairman

(on reintroduction of rugby at this year's Olympics):

"I think it's fantastic because what it will do, it will open up avenues to the game. Asia for instance, it will be a fantastic opportunity to grow the game in Asia. We've seen what Japan have done with their exploits of the 15-a-side. Now there'll be lots of kids, girls and boys, who want to play the game of rugby and they look at sevens as a discipline that they can play probably easier than the 15-a-side game."
