Racing beat Leicester to set up Saracens final

  • Racing 92 reached the final of a major European club competition for the first time in their history after holding on to beat Leicester 19-16 on Sunday (24th April).

Leicester faced Racing Metro in the second European Rugby Champions Cup semi-final in Nottingham on Sunday.

And it was former New Zealand international, Joe Rokocoko, who sparked the game into life in the third minute.

The Racing winger the catalyst for Maxime Machenaud's try.

Dan Carter added the conversion and later slotted a penalty to give Racing a 10-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

Leicester clawed back two penalties but couldn't maintain their discipline and another Carter penalty gave Racing a 13-6 half-time lead.

Further penalties were traded in the early stages of the second half before Johan Goosen added Racing's second try.
    Or so he thought.

Referee Nigel Owens consulted the TMO, who spotted Chris Masoe's forward pass. No try

Racing's dominant defence continued to hold a mistake-ridden Leicester side at bay though and long-range penalty specialist Goosen slotted three points from the left sideline in the 74th minute to make it 19-9.

But Leicester finally found a way through the Racing defence in the final minute of the 80 -Telusa Veainu going over from Adam Thompstone's offload.

Williams quickly slotted the conversion to make it 19-16 and leave time for the re-start, but discipline - and time - were not on their side, and Racing held on for the win.

They will now take on Saracens for the title of European champions at the Grand Stade de Lyon in France on 14th May.
