Sevens champions Fiji aiming for Rio gold

Thursday, April 14 2016 by SNTV
  • World Rugby Sevens Series champions Fiji hope their title defence will lead to gold at the Rio Olympic Games in August.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Ben Ryan, Fiji Sevens head coach (on his team's momentum after its Hong Kong Sevens title)

"I think last week there was huge amounts of pressure. There was a huge expectation in Fiji to win Hong Kong. We went in as defending champions as well and world champions, so last week the pressure was piled high on them. I think they probably feel a little bit less now that they succeeded last weekend. So it's more a question of me keeping the foot on their heads I suppose a little bit this week and remind them that every tournament garnishes the same amount of World Series points. This is the first time we've been to Singapore so we want to be the first team that wins the title."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Ben Ryan, Fiji Sevens head coach (on upcoming competition for spots on Fiji's Rio Olympic team)

"After London and hopefully defending our world title, we'll go back to Fiji and it's going to be a fight out. Those guys are going to go toe-to-toe against each other on the island. So their excited, but they are also aware of they slip up or they drop off or they are part of a team that doesn't have a great performance in a tournament, then their chances of going to Rio are going to be slightly diminished. So for those reasons as well, they want to do well this weekend. The new guys coming in, they don't want to look like they are coming in and they are lesser of a player than the ones that have been left out this weekend. They are keen to succeed."
