Grand Slam a 'small step' for England - Jones

Monday, March 21 2016 by SNTV
  • Reaction from Eddie Jones after England beat France 31-21 in Paris on Saturday night (19th March) to secure the country's first Six Nations Championship Grand Slam since 2003.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Eddie Jones, England head coach (on winning the Grand Slam):

"Well I think, winning the Grand Slam means that you beat every team in the competition, and it means you are the most dominant team. So I think everyone's ecstatic to be the most dominant team in Europe. So that's a nice first step for us, but it's only a small step because we've got much larger steps to go, and that starts with the Australian tour."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Eddie Jones, England head coach (on the young nature of his squad):

"Well the exciting thing for us is that we've got an average age of 24. The winning trophy age for test match rugby is about 28, so we're, three or four years away from peaking, so it's enormously exciting. One of the things I learned as a coach from the early days was always promote players, who you think can be better than the players who are there at the moment, and so we've tried to do that. We've tried to do it in a way that we've looked after them, and in some cases we've pushed guys forward a little bit more quickly than maybe we would have liked, other guys have (been) held back a bit more. But, there's going to be a lot more young players coming into the squad over the next two or three years, putting a lot of pressure on the players in the team at the moment."
