Joshua 'confident' ahead of world title fight with Martin

Saturday, February 20 2016 by SNTV
  • Anthony Joshua 'confident' of securing IBF Heavyweight world title in first against Charles Martin as the pair held a media day on Friday (19 February) in London, England.

SOUNDBITE (English) Anthony Joshua (on being the favourite):

"You have to be confident but at the same time the bookies say one thing and I have to disconnect myself from that because I have to keep the underdog mentality. It is Martin versus Joshua not Joshua versus Martin, he has got the belt and you have to respect he is the champion and I am the underdog so I have to disconnect from what the bookies are saying. At the same time, as the underdog, you have to be confident about beating you opponent in order to become the man on top."

SOUNDBITE (English) Anthony Joshua (on how the world championship would compare to his Olympic gold):

"I think they're two different sports, amateur boxing and professional boxing. How it will compare, I think there will be a lot more attention around the world title. I think it's a great progression. I think it's expected because once you're Olympic champion you should potentially become world champion as well. I think they'll be a lot more attention and a lot more expectation because now I've announced myself on the world level."

SOUNDBITE (English) Charles Martin (On if he feels like favourite):

"Whether I'm the favourite to the fans or the people or not I'm still know what I'm capable of doing and I'm still the favourite in my heart. That's all I need, my motivation is all I need to go in there and handle business April 9th.

SOUNDBITE (English) Charles Martin (on Anthony Joshua's 15 wins by knock out):

"He and I both know the past is the past. The record, putting him in with guys who were tailor made for him to lay down and for him to take the win and same here. We've both had those people in our past and that doesn't matter. What matters now is there are two hungry fighters in there wanting to win and I'm going to be victorious"
