He has popularity that almost all politicians could only dream of. Now boxer Manny Pacquiao is a step closer to becoming a senator in the Phillipines after filing his certificate for candidacy at next year's elections.
He is now one of the wealthiest sportsmen in the world all that came after a childhood in poverty, in his own words he says he now wants to bring a new begining, he says its his response to the challenge of poverty and hopelessness.
Pacquiao is not the first boxer to move into politics former heavyweight world champion Vitaly Klitschko is now mayor of Kiev in Ukraine.
That should serve as some inspiration for Pacquiao, not that it looks like he needs it.
This doesn't signal the end of his boxing career, just yet anyway although he has said he'll retire after one more fight next year.
That could be against Amir Khan, although the British fighter said earlier this week that it is getting increasingly unlikely.
Whoever he faces, it will be a huge event for those here in Manila. Deeper scrutiy of his policies will surely come but right now he's a national treasure.
