Girardi: "It's really disappointing"

  • Houston Astros, New York Yankees, American League Wild Card Playoff, Yankees Stadium.

Script: SOUNDBITE (English): Joe Girardi, New York Yankees Manager
    (On loss)

"It's really disappointing. It's hard. Seasons end abruptly and it's very difficult. This was a club that fought all year long. And there's a lot of character in that room and this hurts. And we just didn't get it done."

SOUNDBITE (English): A.J. Hinch, Houston Astros Manager
    (On how players handled environment)

"Yeah, so I think a couple of things. Dallas (Keuchel) getting through the early part of the game putting zeroes up, I think is always nice. Colby Rasmus' home run, I think everyone exhaled. And you saw a lot of what's right about Astros baseball. We homered, we stole a few bases that came up key, we got a two-out hit from (Jose) Altuve. We had gutsy pitching out of Dallas (Keuchel) and our bullpen and we had some big plays on defense. So I think that's what we do when we're at our best. And I've said before our best is good enough. It was good enough tonight and we advance."

SOUNDBITE (English): Dallas Keuchel, Houston Astros Pitcher
(On pitching on three days rest)

"It's hard not to get up for a game like this. And I knew if I had a chance to take the ball in the wild card game, I didn't want to let my teammates down. And I've worked so hard the last four years in the big leagues, especially with the rebuilding with our team. I knew if we had a shot I was going to give everything I possibly could into any game that I needed to pitch in and thankful enough to get through six (innings). Never would have imagined that I would have pitched that well or we would have played that well in Yankee Stadium on that big of a stage. But that's what we've been doing all year. Nobody really gave us anything at the start of the year and I don't think anybody gave us a shot at the end of the year. So what Gogo (Carlos Gomez) and (Colby) Rasmus did just put the icing on the cake. And we're going to have as much fun as we possibly can in Kansas City.
