  • The first day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival on Tuesday (28th July) brought delight to the country's Al Shaqab Racing who won the Group Two Vintage Stakes with Galileo Gold, trained by Hugo Palmer and ridden by Frankie Dettori.

Day 1 of the Qatar Goodwood Festival saw a win for the Qataris.

Al Shaqab Racing’s Galileo Gold led going into the final furlong.

The horse riden by Frankie Dettori then faced a surge up the inside from Ibn Malik, but the 9/2 second favourite clung on for victory.

Favourite Birchwood finished down in fifth.

Vettori played a waiting game having been closer to last than first before the final furlong.

Racing manager of Galileo, Harry Herbert was quick to praise the horse....

"He's the most beautiful horse, Paco Boy out of a Galileo mare, and he's got this extraordinary mix of the two - he's got the size and scope that you might expect from a Galileo and the sort of strength that Paco Boy certainly puts into his stock so we came here hopeful that he'd give everyone a shout and, in the end, we've been blessed with a winner in a wonderfully prestigious race such as the Vintage so it's seriously exciting."
