Top seed and defending champion Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina was knocked out in the quarter-final of the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament by Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-4 on Friday, while third seed Tomas Berdych beat Jerzy Janowicz 6-7 (9), 6-2, 6-4.

    Script:

Two of tennis' big entertainers - Ernests Gulbis and Juan Martin Del Potro - met in the quarter-finals of the Rotterdam Open.

Del Potro was on the back foot for much of the first set and saved four break points in the first set before finally succumbing 6-3.

The Argentine is recovering from a wrist injury and Gulbis appeared to take encouragement from this.

Gulbis hit 12 aces and 35 winners on his way to victory, in a match that the Estonian dominated with an impressive serve and volley game.

Gulbis will face third seed Tomas Berdych in the semi-finals after the Czech had earlier battled past Poland's Jerzy Janowicz.

Berdych had five set points in the opening set before conceding it 11-9, as Janowicz converted his third set point opportunity.

However, the fiery Pole showed his frustration in the second set, throwing his racket after dropping his serve to hand Berdych a 3-2 lead.

Berdych didn't look back after that and reached the last four in Rotterdam for the second time, having done so in 2012.
