Australian Open: Wawrinka knocks out Djokovic

Wednesday, January 22 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic is knocked out by Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in five sets in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Tuesday (21st January); earlier in the day, there were also wins for Tomas Berdych, Li Na and Eugenie Bouchard.

    Script:

Stanislas Wawrinka beat three time defending champion Novak Djokovic, to set up a semi-final clash with Tomas Berdych at the Australian Open.

Wawrinka had previously lost 14 straight matches against Djokovic, including at last year's Australian Open semi-final.

With the match evenly poised at two sets all the two players traded blows in an epic rally, which Djokovic eventually won to take a crucial break in the fifth set.

But Wawrinka fought back, eventually taking the decider 9-7 to complete a shock victory - 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7.

The result ended Djokovic's 25-match unbeaten run at Melbourne Park and Wawrinka will now go into his last four clash with Berdych, full of confidence.
